About Shivalaya School of Dance

The Shivalaya School of Dance promotes Indian culture through dance. Sudha has been trained in Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Indian folk dances. The Shivalaya School of Dance presents a rich kaleidiscope of classical dances and various Indian folk dances at all recitals.

The students of Shivalaya School of Dance perform regularly for the Indian Cultural Association in all major cities of Alabama. Sudha and her students have also performed at the Montgomery Holiday Market, Riverfest, local schools, Alabama State University (ASU), the Fountain Arts Festival in Prattville, and multicultural festivals at Huntington College, Auburn at Montgomery (AUM), Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the Birmingham Museum of Art and local libraries. The dance recitals have supported various charity orgranizations in India including ASHA for Education.

Sudha's love and passion for dance is reflected in the graceful performances of her many students. Sudha credits her father Shri. S.K.Suri for instilling in her a strong dedication and appreciation for Bharatanatyam and her mother Smt. Sulochana Suri for supporting her interest in dance and music.

Sudha Raghuram, the founder and artistic director of Shivalaya School of dance in Montgomery, Alabama, has the vision of making Indian classical dance more accessible to main stream audiences world-wide.

Sudha has trained more than 60 students. She has hosted and organized dance recitals by visiting artists from India in Atlanta, Auburn, Montgomery and Birmingham. Sudha has also conducted dance workshops at Baldwin Magnet School and for the Andalusia Ballet.

Some highlights include:

  • Recipient of Folk Arts Apprenticeship Grant awarded by Alabama State Council on the Arts 2000-2006, 2008, 2011

  • Awarded the best dancer award by "Nupura" in 2003

  • Recipient of the Folk Arts Apprenticeship 1993-1994

  • Sudha has studied Bharatanatyam under well-known dance gurus of Bengaluru, India, namely Lalitha Srinivasan, B.K Vasanthalakshmi and Vasantha Vedam

  • Passed Junior and Senior grade examinations in Bharatanatyam conducted by the Karnataka Board of Education, India

  • Performed solos and lead dance roles throughout India
